The Okanagan River between Okanagan and Skaha lakes has been altered extensively over the years, from a meandering course with abundant riparian vegetation, to a channel through a highly developed landscape. What were once natural meanders of the Okanagan River have become cut off from the main river, and are now stranded as old river channels, or “oxbows”. Where healthy riparian areas once existed, there are now only remnant wetlands showing significant signs of neglect, with restricted riparian vegetation.

Our Oxbows are in danger

Friends of the Oxbows is here to help
The Friends of the Penticton Oxbows is working to restore and rejuvenate some of the oxbows in the Penticton area. We believe there are opportunities to restore riparian vegetation, improve water flow, and manage invasive species. We envision a much more attractive and productive stretch of wetland habitat along Hwy 97 in Penticton that will be more aesthetically appealing and ecologically productive than the degraded habitats there now.

Before & After pics
The top pic was taken by Tod Redding from OUC I would say about 2011, when cattle were still wintered on the flood plane by the airport.
The bottom one was taken by Rick McKelvey 2026
This Oxbow is on the Reserve, and not one monitored by FOTO, but the changes are dramatic and comparable to what we are seeing on the Penticton side.

Our vision is for the oxbows to be returned to a more natural state than they are in now, with healthy riparian vegetation, water flow and water quality restored to the extent possible, to enhance the quality of life for Penticton residents and visitors alike.
