How You Can Help

Find out how you can help by contacting the Friends of the Penticton Oxbows and reading more about our projects on this website.

Our organization is always looking for individuals and partners to help the Oxbows become healthy again.

April 6/19 - REQUEST We are asking for your support as a FOTO volunteer to assist with planting trees and shrubs at the Ellis Creek Sediment Basin on April 6th between 10:00 am and NOON. Implementation of Stage 1 calls for an early confirmation of volunteers.

BACKGROUND
FOTO has been a member of the Okanagan River Restoration Initiative (ORRI) for some time now and within the past year we have served as a member of an Ad Hoc committee formed to enhance the sediment basin at the bottom of Ellis Creek for fish passage and to improve habitat for other wildlife. The design also allows for the necessary future removal of built up sediments while minimizing disturbance of wetland and adjoining upland habitats. Construction of enhancement works was completed in December last year. The Ad Hoc committee has developed a three Stage plan for the placement of native plant species to complete habitat enhancements. The plan is being actioned now to complete Stage 1...early spring planting. Stage 2 and Stage 3 will occur later.

SUPPORT
FOTO has offered to canvas its members for volunteers to help with the planting. Key aspects of Stage 1 include the following:

  1. Planting...between 10:00 am and Noon, April 6th, 2019;
  2. Volunteers will be briefed on planting methods and materials;
  3. Tools, materials and plants are provided;
  4. Light food and beverages will be provided;
  5. Volunteers are reminded to dress for the weather...Hats, gloves, warm clothing and boots may be needed.

Please contact your Penticton elected officials to express your support for restoring the oxbows.
Our vision is for the oxbows to be returned to a more natural state than they are in now, with healthy riparian vegetation, water flow and water quality restored to the extent possible, to enhance the quality of life for Penticton residents and visitors alike.
